Subject: Question/Help map cache for xastir off-line wms server cached
exi_64
Send Email Send Email

Hi,

have do anyone toyed using TileCache to give a off-line map cache to xastir ? I

have had alot of trouble with getting map proper.. but with some tweaking I

manage to use the radar wms geo files methode to implement the use of wms map

server in xastir. all this is great but allot of areas dosn`t have proper

Internet cover. and just to make it harder there is a on-line download limit on

some of the wms servers we use. So I am looking for a way to cache the map, and

avoid any unneeded req to the on-line wms server. and I want to use it off-line

when thats needed. my problem is that I down manage to find a usable way to get

the wms data into the cache. and xastir re download image files if it is one bit

off so that dos`t help either..

dose anyone have a suggestion ?

What sort of maps are you after? There's an entirely new sort of map caching
that works for the OSM map tiles which works even if your screen size or panning
is different from when you cached the tiles. You do have to go through the
different zoom levels to get all the different tiles cached though. There are
street maps and topo map tiles available with OSM. This requires Xastir-2.0.0
or 2.0.1.

An alternative is to download the Cloudmade Shapefile extracts and use those in
Xastir, if street maps are adequate. I throw those on top of the NOAA county
shapefile so that I get the land/water boundary.

Let me know the type of map you're trying to use and what area of the world
you're in and perhaps I can help.

BTW: This question would be best asked on the Xastir list. Subscribe at

Hi,Thanx for fast replay.
Sorry my bad I should have told you. I have great map. but my location is above
the arctic circle witch make using scanned map a bit hard. I been test using a
Government map service and result so fare seams to be good when it comes to
aliment. my wms url is :
http://openwms.statkart.no/skwms1/wms.toporaster2?SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.3.0&LAYE\
RS=topografiskraster&FORMAT=image/png&CRS=CRS:84&
and is used in configuration as a WMSSERVER but refresh is disabled.

So far it work good, but is the problem of off-line use.. (NB i have a cup-el of
other maps sources to but they all use the same system)

Sorry for the bad english is 22:54L been up 4 oever 18 hours working :(

did this give you sufficient information or do you want me to upload some config
files.. The other map sources you mention is tested. but map is not detailed
enough for SAR operations. I use xasir version 2.00 at the moment have tested
2.01 but it dissent make a different in this aspect.

If your only source of good maps is those raster maps, then consider using the
Snapshot feature of Xastir to create your own set of offline maps. Each time
you enable the snapshot feature you'll get files called "snapshot.geo" and
"snapshot.png" in your ~/.xastir/tmp/ directory. You can rename those two files
and drop them somewhere under your maps directory to create your own set of
raster maps. Do this for the area of interest, at the zoom levels of interest,
and you'll create your own set of offline maps. Remember to turn off display of
all stations/objects during this so that you get the cleanest snapshots saved.

Someone with more WMS experience may be able to script such snapshots so that
you can snag an entire set of them at multiple zoom levels without all the
renaming the above method requires.

Does that help?

Subject: Micro-Trak RTG FA (Frequency Agile) version ready to ship!
vhsproducts
Send Email Send Email

I am very happy to let you know that Byonics has the new MT-RTG (FA) up on the
website ( http://byonics.com/mt-rtg) The new RTG looks like the old RTG (single
channel version) but its totally different underneath the lid! ( I posted a
photo in the photo section) Byon developed a newly reinvented version of the TT3
chip with a PIC with over twice the memory. This will allow us to create new and
special versions of the firmware that you will be able to load with a simple
bootloader program. This will include things like a weather chip, FOX, or a sort
of KISS transmitter like the TinyPack. This will allow us to easily tailor
versions for different applications.

Since the new unit is frequency agile, you can program any two frequencies in
the 2 Meter band. This hopefully will make our friends in Europe, Australia, and
Asia, happy.

The MT-RTG-FA can selectably report two channels of on-board telemetry, which
will be supported by APRS.fi graphically. The unit will monitor and report
supply voltage and temperature. Support for additional telemetry will be
available shortly.

Like the old RTG ( which is still available) the new RTG will be shipped to you
with everything "Ready-to-go"; Pre-programmed with your info. A complete package
includes the 10 Watt transmitter, power/data cable, a GPS 2 magnet mount "mouse"
receiver, and a magnet mount antenna. Installation takes about 15 seconds if you
take your time! The only thing you may want to consider as an accessory is a
null modem cable ( available from Byonics or build you own) in case you want to
reprogram the unit your self. A new and special version of the Configuration
Software will be used for all Micro-Trak frequency agile products.

Hey Allen,

Yes, actually, if I can get enough units to Canada, there will be at least four flights with the RTrak-HAB before the end of the year.  We're very excited about it!

We're staying busy, but going to miss youins at Dayton this year.  Hope you make a killing.

Yup! The Byonics booth is pretty tight quarters too: All those zillions of radio specific cables! We ( or at least I) will plan on having a beer for you. We will be showing and selling our new frequency agile RTG, so I am expecting a lot of European customers, and the only EU language I can even began to speak is German.....and not very well. Should be a challenge, but most Europeans speak English too it seems. and hopefully, a couple of other new products.

Hey Allen,

Yes, actually, if I can get enough units to Canada, there will be at least four flights with the RTrak-HAB before the end of the year.  We're very excited about it!

We're staying busy, but going to miss youins at Dayton this year.  Hope you make a killing.

Jason,

Don't you have a test flight of the new unit coming up soon? Its about time people started building gear specifically for the balloon people, and I am sure you will make a lot of them very happy!

One-way SAR Trackers have great value, but someone needs to show the whole
value of APRS to the SAR mission.

Four areas come to mind:

* Texting for keeping teams consistently informed in the field of updated
information.
* Objects to and from the field to mark things and to give guidance
* The value of portable digipeaters to provide end-to-end connectivity in
support of operations
* The value of 2-way trackers and attached GPS displays for situational
awareness of teams to EACH OTHER's positions.

Think outside the box.

The thing you neglected in your suggestions Bob is that most SAR folks are
not Hams. A dedicated Ham who is trying to make APRS work in SAR is lucky
enough to have a non-ham SAR person agree to even allow a tracker to placed
in their SAR pack. That alone is success in getting APRS into SAR
activities. They think even a TH-D72A is too big and too heavy to go into
their pack! At least when the well trained Ham can be in SAR base and use
the received positions to better determine where that SAR team is and how
well they cover their assigned square. As a result SAR base can via SAR
radio redirect that team to a more desirable location without having to wait
for that team to return to SAR base.

Although I failed in my many years of trying to integrate APRS into our
local SAR activities, I am still convinced the concept will save time and
lives. Sure all four of Bob's suggestions would be great and make searches
be more successful but they are not realistic during real SAR missions. I
could never convince my local IC's that they even wanted to use APRS because
they are local cops who are not computer geeks, so they just shunned the
concept. Our Sheriff's Dept Chief in charge of our county's SAR activities
finally wound up firing me, a volunteer, since I was too overbearing to him
and his operations. Very unfortunate but the reality of life in the real
world.

Believe me, I tried. I even gave APRS demos and classes at our WA SAR
Conferences for a number of years till they wore me out....... The only
time SAR was used during our SAR activities was if, and only if, I was in
SAR Base running the APRS operation. I just could not get others interested
in learning APRS well enough so that they could relieve me in SAR base......

So keep on trying to educate your local SAR groups and SAR management that
APRS will save time and lives in SAR activities, but go slow and don't try
to force the high tech issues on those who are not willing to accept them.
Someday, they will open their eyes and wonder why they did not use APRS
sooner...... In the mean time, I will keep trying to help those SAR groups
who ask for help. BTW our county's EOC still has the full time APRS station
I set up there 15+ years ago and our ComVan still operates the tracker I
installed there over 10 years ago, so at least I know when and where a SAR
activity is in progress.....

Hi,

I'm reading this thread with great interest and I can understand the problems
associated with APRS & SAR.

In the UK Mountain Rescue England & Wales, some teams use a programme called
MRMap - www.mrmap.org.uk - this is a program written by a Lake District MR
member and using the Simoco radio equipment they have allows the GPS microphone
to transmit the GPS data, silently, across the SAR frequencies we are licences
to use.

This is then received in base or in the Control, Command & Comms vehicle on a Pc
running the program to decode the incoming GPS data, and then displays it on a
map, showing the call sign of the received signal and also the location of the
last transmission.

All this was started many years ago by MR members who were also amateur licenced
folk, using APRS on 70 MHz - I think ??

It's proved very successful and is being used in HeliMed Air ambulances, in the
north west of England, and there is talk about it appearing in the SAR Sea Kings
of the military as well..

If you want to have a looks go to the website, join the forum and ask as many
questions as you want :) we're a friendly bunch..

Regards
Dave

KKids Search Team page

KlaasKids Foundation sponsors a national Search Team (full complement of searchers, K-9s, case workers, SAR managers, etc) that is based here in Pensacola, Florida but travels to organize and manage searches throughout the US and Canada.  The most current, publicized case is the search for Michelle Le in Hayward, CA.

The Foundation is in the process of setting up regional Search resource centers across the U.S. to reduce the time it takes to implement a missing child search.

The team currently uses GARMIN FRS radios with GPS tracking, and independent GPS Loggers to communicate and document search areas.
We need a longer range radio system that is not tied to our base location, but can be used legally wherever we travel in the US.
So far, the only system I have found that will allow us to do this is the Multi-Use Radio System (MURS).  MURS has its power limitations, has only 5 channels and may not use repeaters, but it does allow for a base antenna to 60 ft (or 20 ft above structure) which should give adequate coverage for limited search areas..

Since search is the day-to-day function of the foundation, use of Amateur Radio is prohibited where other means are available:

§ 97.113   Prohibited transmissions.

    (a) No amateur station shall transmit:

        (5) Communications, on a regular basis, which could reasonably be furnished alternatively through other radio services.

Other than Amateur Radio where other systems may not work (hilly areas, etc), what do other traveling teams use?

What do the FEMA Task Force teams use and can it be used by other teams when the FTFs are not deployed?

It may be the day-to-day function, but I would interpret "regular basis" as on a day-in-and-day-out basis at all locations.

I would say that using Amateur radio would not be going against  the regulation. You are not using the radio to conduct business you are using them for safety.  The other thing is there are ARES/RACES groups that cover most areas in the US and some of Canada that could do communication support I know that many ARES/RACES groups do this.

Before you all start telling me to use the "National SAR Frequency" of 155.160:

I have seen references to 155.160 as the "National SAR frequency" but have also seen quite a bit of "ain't so".
This is what the DHS National Interoperability Field Operations Guide (NIFOG) says:

VHF Public Safety Mutual Aid and Common Channels
Channel (MHz) Usage                        Wideband ID Narrowband ID Note
155.1600 Search and Rescue Common SAR WFMSAR         NFMSAR            Not designated by FCC
availability varies.*

* Emphasis is mine.

In several jurisdictions, 155.160 is assigned to other emergency services. It is a ambulance and EMS channel in Florida and several other states.
Our local SAR team (Escambia Search and Rescue) is licensed on another common PS channel, 155.280.
From my research, (mostly GOOGLE of 155.160) it appears that 155.160 is only a SAR Common in those states where that state licensed it as such.  One must use someone's license to operate in the Public Safety band.
We intend to have it available, along with several other common and NIFOG designated interoperability frequencies, but it cannot be used everywhere.  To my knowledge (30+ years in SAR and ARES communications), the FCC NEVER reserved or designated 155.160 as a "National SAR Frequency".

Also, GMRS now is designated as a Personal radio service and each family or individual must be licensed, for a fee.  There is no longer an "itinerant Business Band channel".

MURS is the new Citizens' Band radio on 151 and 154 MHz. No license required, and data is allowed (for Automatic Position Reporting Systems).

Ham radio comes in with interoperability with other groups, allows use of repeaters when public safety does not, more power (and range) than other radio services, and coverage where cell phones may not work.  So 'other' means may not be always available.

I would say that using Amateur radio would not be going against  the regulation. You are not using the radio to conduct business you are using them for safety.  The other thing is there are ARES/RACES groups that cover most areas in the US and some of Canada that could do communication support I know that many ARES/RACES groups do this.

Subject: New to APRS - hardware question

Charles Sparke, KC7JKJ, Lovelock, NV here.

I've been interested in APRS tracking since I first heard about it years ago but wasn't sure where the technology was as far as the base maps for the positions and tracks to overlay on so I asked another Ham about it a week ago.  He showed me the aprs.fi webpage and his vehicle (and his wife's) current locations on it.  I've got the bug now to get my own hardware setup.

For a basic tracking setup, I'm looking at Byonics Micro-Trak RTG FA like the other Ham had.  He also suggested a Kantronics KPC+ for a TNC for my radios to interface with the computer.  I'm looking at that one or the Byonics Tiny Track 4 as options and would be interested in pros and cons for each.  Price is close enough not to be an issue.

My real question here is on the hardware connection end:  both of the above TNC's have a DB25 port to comm with computer.  Almost no new laptops come with even the DB9 let alone especially the DB25 - only USB ports.  Are the DB25-to-USB converters out there working with these TNC's (Kantronics and Tiny Track 4) ?   Usually the DB25-to-USB are doing the same thing as a DB25-to-DB9 adapter - dropping out "unneeded" pins.  Are they working out okay?  I want to use a laptop as I'm in Search and Rescue and Civil Air Patrol and need the portability.

Thanks in advance.
